He was awarded a scholarship for postgraduate study in China (ceramics) and France (museum restoration). During the American War, he was sent to the mountain highlands to depict the armed struggle; his art has since focused on the ethnic tribes whom he portrays in carved lacquer paintings (sơn khắc). Eight of his paintings are in the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum in Hanoi.
