- JACQUELINE SIMCOX A rare, large painting on deerskin, the central cartouche decorated with a garden scene of two red-roofed pavilions and ladies at scholarly pursuits: within one pavilion four ladies admire a scroll painting; in the other two ladies play a board game while seated at a large square table and two attendants stand at their side with refreshments. In the garden, at the rear, two ladies sit at a stone table, the one writing in a book; an ink stone, water pot and brush rest beside her. Her companion seated beside a pile of books, both overlooked by an attendant holding scrolls. The foreground with a lady on horseback with a servant holding a large fan decorated with the sun and moon, while another carries a musical instrument, wrapped in a cloth, under her arm. The scene flanked by a red-capped crane and a deer, both symbols of longevity. The lower panels decorated with a man carrying a hu, symbol of office, and dressed as a Ming grandee in a flowing red robe with front medallion; a fan held above him by a servant. To the left and right blue panels with large buddha’s hand finger citrons with prunus blossom, one filled with scholar’s vessels, the other with books and a large dish of fruit resting on a small red lacquered stand. The outermost panels with a pair of mandarin ducks, lotus plants and a dragonfly; the other with a long-tailed bird perched on a prunus bough and gazing at a butterfly; rocks, peonies and day lilies below. The central cartouche framed by four feng huang: the two female birds with even-numbered curling tail feathers; the male birds each with three serrated tail feathers. The male with uneven numbers of feathers, representing the male element, yang, and the female birds with even numbers of feathers representing the female element, yin. The birds are decorated in the five fundamental colours representing the five Confucian virtues: black, white, red, green and yellow - the colour palette repeated throughout the painting. The outer border composed of small octagonal motifs in black, filled with formal flower heads and an outer narrow border of white flower heads and scrolls on a red ground.
