Hasuda Shugoro is considered one of the leading modernist artists to have worked in bronze during the Post-War period. In this rendition of a sleek lion dog, the artist enhances his mastery of sculptural design with careful green and red patination. Hasuda created this design in 1948.
Born in Kanazawa City, Hasuda first studied at Ishikawa Prefectural Industrial School, before moving to the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, from where he graduated in 1938. His work first gained national award at the Nitten of 1949, and in 1953 received the Nitten’s prestigious Hokuto prize.
A founder member of the Creative Crafts Association, in 1952, he went on to establish the Gendai Kōgei Bijutsuka Kyōkai, Creative Crafts Association, in 1961, and was appointed to professorial post at Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1991, in recognition of his craft achievements, he received the Order of Cultural Merit, bunka kunsho.
