Masami Yamada, Curator for Japan in the V&A’s Asian Department, introduces Urushi Now, the museum’s display of 21st-century Japanese lacquer. Lacquer has been used in Japan for over 7,000 years, and its techniques developed locally while absorbing influences from across Asia. Drawing on her research into contemporary urushi makers, she explores how today’s artists are reinterpreting this ancient medium. Her responsibilities at the V&A span Japanese netsuke, lacquerware and ukiyo-e woodblock prints, and she contributed to the museum’s major exhibition Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk (2020).
