Dr Edward Luper explores Tang Ying, the Qing official who oversaw the imperial kilns at Jingdezhen, and the collaborations behind porcelain made for the court. Tang Ying (1682–1756) is often regarded as the most celebrated supervisor of the kilns, partly thanks to his illustrated treatise on porcelain production, Taoye tushuo (1743). His career spanned the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong reigns.
Dr Luper is Specialist for Chinese Works of Art at Bonhams New Bond Street, with expertise across jade, porcelain, cloisonné, painting, furniture and bronzes. He studied Modern and Classical Chinese at SOAS and completed his Master’s and doctorate at Oxford, with a thesis on the Ming painter and poet Xu Wei.
