Gods and Gardens: Divinity, Magic and Faith
The exhibition considers the idea that gardens and by wider inference nature as a “garden” are imbued with symbolism that can be interpreted as divine, magical and an embodiment of faith. Such symbolic spaces are revered as being sacred in some way, by virtue of mythology or religion, or through the witty verses of a much-loved court poet. Such a sacred space might be a mythical landscape, a battleground for gods and demons, or a forest, a temple garden or a grand terraced Mughal garden. This exhibition presents Indian miniature paintings around three themes: the cosmic landscape of the Gods (India’s great legends), forests and groves and gardens in poetry and design. In doing so, I hope to convey to you the wonderful breadth of styles and periods that is the Indian miniature.
