China’s 1800s – Material and Visual Culture

This two-day conference will offer participants a chance to hear from more than 30 speakers about the material and visual culture of the last century of imperial China. There will be four sessions each day.

Day 1 – Thursday 8th June 2023

  1. Painting and patronage
  2. Calligraphy and seal carving
  3. Vernacular painting and prints
  4. Maps, money and magic lanterns.


In the evening there will be a keynote lecture from Susan Naquin, Professor Emerita of History at Princeton University, “Reconsidering China’s Nineteenth Century.”

Day 2 Friday 9th June 2023

  1. Commerce and fashion
  2. Textiles
  3. Decorative arts
  4. Craft technology and the environment


The conference will conclude with a short Peking Opera performance

£40 for non-members, £30 for students and BM members – two- day price includes tea/coffee and a Peking Opera performance.
